New York “winter” so far

New York "winter" so far

This is a two month feature spanning December and January which usually are cold and stormy. Last year saw record snowfall, freezing temperatures and if I recall, not that many waves. What a difference a year makes! Some call it global warming, I prefer climate change, but either way it’s been a crazy “winter” here [...]

A November To Remember!

A November To Remember!

November is transition time here in New York and that usually means waves.  The air cools, days shorten and storms start brewing.  This November featured a bunch of offshore storms that sent Hurricane like pulses up and down the east coast to start the month…amazingly we had temperatures in the upper 50′s and low 60′s [...]

Oktoberfest on Fire Island

Oktoberfest on Fire Island

October is almost always my favorite month here on Long Island.  The beautiful skies, the migrating fish and birds and oh yeah great waves!  This October didn’t feature hurricane swells (besides Ophelia) but we did see a crazy Noreaster that occured on the anniversary of the Perfect Storm.  We also had a bunch of smaller fun [...]

EasyCanvasPrints.Com

EasyCanvasPrints.Com

EASY CANVAS PRINTS   As most of you who frequent this website know it started as a daily surf report. Basically, Otis (my loyal best friend yellow Labrador) and I would head down to the beach every morning to shoot some photos of the wave conditions and I would post them. I started shooting [...]

Hurricane Katia Lights Up Fire Island!

Hurricane Katia Lights Up Fire Island!

September is usually THE month for warm weather/water, Hurricane swells and offshore winds here in NY.  What made this September different was that the World Tour came here to try and score these conditions we New Yorkers are so fond of.  Amazingly (or right on schedule) Hurricane Katia came marching up the east coast far [...]

May Day(s)!

May Day(s)!

A foggy start to the month ended with gorgeous weather…and the crowds appeared all at once it seemed!  There were some fun waves when you could see through the fog and warmer water has everyone out of the winter suits and feeling much lighter!  Here’s to May and the beginning of what is hopefully a [...]

April Barrels on Fire Island

April Barrels on Fire Island

An April Fool’s Noreaster started off what turned out to be a solid month of surf here in New York.  We also had a ton of fog and chilly days here on the south shore as well…but finally the weather has warmed and summer is right around the corner!  Here are some of the stand-outs [...]

TIDES OF MARCH

TIDES OF MARCH

After a brutal New York winter March proved to be a welcomed change of season for Long Island surfers (despite winter-like weather for most of the month!)  There were quite a few fun 2-4 ft days and a couple of larger swells, including a April Fool’s Noreaster!  With spring finally starting to warm up the [...]

Long…Long Island Winter

Long...Long Island Winter

What a cold, and often flat winter we had here on Long Island.  Despite some huge storms and record blizzards charging through the area we basically got skunked this winter…as did most of the East Coast for that matter!  There were a few memorable moments sprinkled in though and our trip to the Outer Banks [...]

World Tour comes to New York?!

World Tour comes to New York?!

After years of second class status in the eyes of the American Surf Industry and surfers alike, the Quicksilver Pro New York will be held in Long Beach N.Y. from September 4-15, 2011…right in the middle of Hurricane Season and of course when the water is at it’s warmest.  This is a huge gamble on [...]

FIRE FOX

FIRE FOX

It was a year ago that Kristen Bednar passed away on New Year’s Eve.  It hit hard because my wife and I were supposed to be celebrating with Kristen in Vermont.  We couldn’t go.  I remember feeling bad because I knew Kristen would be “mad” that we weren’t going…I had now lost a friend, [...]

November’s best

November's best

It wasn’t a great month wave wise but there were a few standout days that produced some good surf in the beginning of the month.  The fishing continued (just like October) to be outstanding.  Here are some of the better shots for the month…. Hopefully December will have more barrels.  Thanks for all the support [...]

In the Wash 11/17 Best surf fishing ever?

In the Wash 11/17 Best surf fishing ever?

Could this be the best fall bass season in memory? That is a question many anglers are throwing out there as the fall fishing season continues to produce memorable days for surf rats and boaters. The entire south shore seems to be on fire in the morning hours these past two weeks with schools of bass and blues on sand eels from Moriches to Fire Island Inlet. The lure of choice remains the diamond jig…

BEST OF SURF FIRE ISLAND (THE OLD SITE)

A look back at some of shots from the old site. These shots cover much of the 2008-2009 seasons; including this shot of TK gettting shacked last winter on an outer bar pit.

In the Wash 10/28

In the Wash 10/28

The south shore exploded this past week with a huge bodies of fish moving throughout Fire Island. The fish are feeding on large swaths of sand eels, spearing and rain bait. The majority of surf anglers are scoring fish using tins with tubes, hopkins jigs and small bucktails. While there are some huge bluefish leading the charge the bass are…

IN THE WASH 10/20

IN THE WASH 10/20

The action is getting hot out on the beaches with large pods of fish cruising east and west in the surf. Monster bluefish up to 15 pounds are really putting the burn on anglers arms and smiles on their faces. The blues are hitting…

Fire Island Skies

Fire Island Skies

Not sure which I like more.  Sunrise or sunset?  They both are distinct and beautiful…..here are a few from the past year on Fire Island.

IN THE WASH 10/13/10

IN THE WASH 10/13/10

Fire Island surf fishing is heating up with schools of sandeels being chased by big blues and striped bass.  After all the swells and rain we’ve had lately this past week has seen tranquill conditions and many anglers were able to get into the ocean and chase down the birds. Water temperatures are still holding pretty [...]
